Nur Bano Ali Urges FIA To Get More Women in the Board
The number of women in the Board of the Fiji Institute of Accountants is embarrassing and sad, says the South Pacific Stock Exchange’s chairperson Nur Bano Ali.
At the moment there is only one female council member out of 9 in the Fiji Institute of Accountants Board.
An Institute that has, for many years, advocated for women to hold leadership positions.
Ali described the situation as “almost depressing”.
She said she was told by some of the Institute’s women members, that they were afraid to put their hands up because they believed that they don’t have a chance to win a battle they feel that they are outnumbered in.
The Institute’s re-elected President, Nitesh Lal, said he and the Council will look into the matter but at the same time, he encourages people to be confident and nominate themselves or whoever they believe can make a positive contribution.
To set an example and encourage more women to step out of their comfort zones, the Women in Business team reaches out and organises confidence building workshops and training on how to become a Board member.
