It was truly a challenging yet exciting moment for Team Fiji flag bearer Grace Yee to represent the country in front of over 10,000 spectators during the 2018 Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Sunday (10am Fiji Time).
Speaking after the opening ceremony 16-year-old Grace Yee said “It’s an honour and privileged to represent Fiji up on the big stage in front of such a big crowd.’’
‘At first I had mixed feelings both nervous and excited but later on during the opening ceremony after listening to the screams gave me some confidence. It wasn’t easy for me.
‘Being part of the Youth Olympic Games is a great achievement for me and I hope to deliver my best performance and make Fiji proud,’’
Meanwhile, Grace started her competition with a loss in the Women’s singles Table Tennis event to Poland yesterday ( 10am Fiji Time).
The 3rd Summer Youth Olympic Games kicked off in Argentina’s capital in an open street party where for the first time an Olympic opening ceremony has been held in the streets of a city and free for the general public, away from a traditional stadium.
Tens of thousands of people filled the streets, while the athletes and the Olympic family were among the audience.
It was an amazing show with great talents in sports, tango and technology setup stage.
About 4000 young athletes from 206 countries and regions around the world will participate in 32 sports in the next 12 days.
It is the first Olympic competition in history with an equal number of male and female athletes.
