Fiji and Australia are co-hosting a Pacific Civil-Military Disaster Response Coordination Workshop in Suva.
This is to support improved civil-military coordination of national and regional disaster preparedness and response in the Pacific.
Opened by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Disaster Management, and Meteorological Services, Inia Seruiratu, the workshop intends to strengthen intra-regional capacity to support nation-led responses to disasters in the Pacific.
Building on recent experiences in the region such as Tropical Cyclones Pam, Winston, and Gita, the workshop will examine how civil military cooperation in these responses could be strengthened.
Seruiratu said that as a region, Pacific countries desire to have a civil military taskforce that is able to prepare for and respond to national emergency events domestically and across borders.
Invited participants include National Disaster Management Office and Police/Military representatives from the Pacific.
Representatives from Australia, New Zealand, France, the United States of America, the European Union, and the United Nations are also expected to attend as international disaster responders.
