“We Condemn all acts of Torture, Brutality, Cruelty and Degrading Treatment”

These were the words of the Director of the Fiji’s Human Rights and Anti- Discrimination Commission – Ashwin Raj while responding to the recent Alleged assault on a Remand Inmate.

“We condemn all acts of torture, brutality, cruelty, and degrading treatment. The National Human Rights Commission has met on two occasions at the Remand Center, the individual who was brutalized. We acknowledge the fact, the Corrections Commissioner has taken swift actions, suspended six and removed one and also referred the matter to Police. The Police started its investigation but significantly the Human Rights Commission also intervened in court last Friday on this so we don’t take this matter lightly. We also want to say that we’ve started our own independent investigations into the Death you know of someone allegedly in the hands of Police and so once again the Police is investigating so is the National Human Rights Commission and in all likelihood we might be even instituting legal proceedings as we did in other cases of Brutality.”
