The Commission on the Status of Women provides a great opportunity to raise our voice on the issues and successes faced by Fijian women back at home and at the same time learn from other nations with the mutual goal of achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa at the 63rd session of the  Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York.
The Fijian delegation which is headed by the Minster includes the Permanent Secretary, the Director for Women, two support staff and also Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Satyendra Prasad and the First Secretary Mr Gene Bai.
The delegation will participate in the 2 weeks long meeting accompanied by side events and bilateral meetings with sister countries.  The second week will involve negotiations by member states on the outcome document for this session.
The CSW composes of member states and inter-governmental bodies that advocates for gender quality and the empowerment of women and girls.
It was incepted in 1946 and had its first ever sitting on the 10th to the 24th of February in 1947. Each year, the Commission sits in the General Assembly Hall at the UN Head Quarters in New York.
The opening of the 63rd session saw two very inspiring and influential speeches from the H.E Geraldine Byrne and the Secretary General of UN, H.E Antonio Guterres.
In addition, Vuniwaqa is also expected to deliver a country statement later in the week on the theme Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls and also attend parallel events that includes side events and round table discussions with other women leaders and bilateral meetings.
