The Fiji National University’s (FNU) College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies has refined and developed the Masters of Professional Accounting (MPA) programme in association with CPA Australia which will be offered from Semester Two this year.
MPA (CPA) is a first of its kind programme offered in Fiji, whereupon completion students will not only graduate with a Master’s degree, but will also complete Education component to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), which is a prestigious and internationally renowned professional qualification.
Dean CBHTS, Professor Ram Karan, says this is a milestone for the College as well as an opportunity for the students to get face to face interaction while studying the CPA program.
“This programme will enable students to obtain a university qualification and receive direct academic support from the university’s experienced academic staff together with CPA Australia programme study guides while they prepare for external examinations,” said Professor Karan.
“Up until now, students take their own initiative and pursue the programme on their own with materials provided by CPA Australia. While studying through FNU, students will also have face to face interaction, classes and consultation. They will have an advantage of having someone to guide them.
“The assessments used in these courses will be a combination of the CPA Australia’s study materials and online resources provided to students. Students will undertake examinations in this programme in addition to ongoing assessments.”
CPA Australia provided two days of training to FNU staff on the type of teaching and assessment required for the CPA Program as well as the various resources available for each subject. According to Professor Karan, students enrolled in this programme will also have access to FNU resources such as the libraries and computer labs.
He adds that the students will also have some fee benefit if they pursue MPA (CPA) through FNU.
“For the entire 12 courses in the programme, FNU will charge tuition fee as stipulated in the FNU finance policy. To assist students with their tuition, CPA Australia will discount its program embedded only in this programme,”he says.
“However, the discount will be applicable on each course only on the first attempt. The discount will not be applicable for students who would repeat the course.”
Prof Karan said the University aims to fill the market for CPA Australia in Fiji by offering this programme.
“Whether it be private or public sector – every employer is raising the qualification. For Accountants MPA (CPA) qualification will be an added advantage.”
