Looking ahead into what is probably going to be a very wet and turbulent New Year’s Day
– Tropical Disturbance TDO3F – continues to move closer to Fiji, and it is likely to turn into a cyclone in the next 18 to 24 hours.
The Tropical Disturbance is expected to intensify into a Tropical Depression and into a cyclone within the next 6 to 12 hours.
A Tropical Cyclone Alert is now in force for Rotuma, the Yasawa Group, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and the nearby Smaller Islands, Northern Viti Levu, as well as the Northern Lau and Lomaiviti groups.
The Nadi Weather Office says the Tropical Disturbance is expected to enter the Fiji group, and be located 620 kilometres west-northwest of Nadi – at 3pm today.
According to the Nadi Weather Office, the Tropical Depression may bring damaging gale force winds over Rotuma, the Yasawa Group, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Northern Viti Levu, and the Northern Lau and Lomaiviti Groups, in the next 24 to 36 hours.
These winds may break tree branches, and uproot shallow-rooted trees, as it picks up speed.
