The United Nations Secretary General (UNSG), His Excellency Antonio Guterres was accorded the Fijian Traditional welcoming ceremony at the Grand Pacific Hotel yesterday.
The Government of the Republic of Fiji was glad to greet Mr Guterres traditionally as it was the first time for an incumbent UNSG to visit our shores. The Republic of Fiji Military Forces conducted the Fijian Traditional Ceremony at the Grand Pacific Hotel – Britannia Ball Room.
The UNSG was accompanied by Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) leaders and their delegation to observe the remarkable Fijian protocol.
This historic visit of the UNSG provides windows of opportunities for PIF leaders to raise their concern on global issues in regards to climate change and deepen their collaboration in advancing pacific development interests.
The five days visit will include a talanoa session and bilateral meeting with PIF leaders, a courtesy call to HE the President of Fiji, the wreath laying ceremony at the National War Memorial, an address to members of the Parliament of Fiji and interactive sessions with youths and women on climate change and gender issues
