And in a statement issued after the Parliament sitting, the Opposition says the SODELPA Members had walked out of Parliament after expressing serious concern about the legality of the appointment of the President.

It says Opposition MP Semesa Karavaki raised a Point of Order for the Members citing Section 84 of the 2013 Constitution which stipulates the process of appointment can only occur if there is a vacancy.

The Statement says clearly, there is a President that is still serving and as such, there is no vacancy until his term expires later this year.

SODELPA believes that the proposed appointment is illegal and may affect any major decisions such as the upcoming election.

The Oppositioon statement says important issues such as this should be referred to the Supreme Court of Fiji for interpretation.

As you heard earlier in the first story of the bulletin, the Speaker of Parliament has ruled that the provisions of the Constitution, and the Standing Orders – have been complied with, accordingly.
