There is a shortage of qualified personnel in the field of geo-science, especially during natural disasters – and this is a concern.
This was raised by the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources Permanent Secretary – Malakai Finau – during the Pacific Islands Science, Technology and Resources Conference, that ended last week.
Finau says there is not enough staff to monitor natural disasters, such as cyclones, tsunamis, and flooding.
According to him – there is a lack of qualified geologists, mining engineers, meteorologists, and so on.
Submissions will be made to implement a curriculum in the local universities.
