The planned Savusavu cable system should be ready for commercial service by June 21st of this year.

This was the confirmation by the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama while addressing the Victorian Multicultural Sports Association Business Event in Melbourne.

Baininamara adds this will give far greater internet and mobile phone connectivity to Fijians living in the Northern Division, on par with what is enjoyed on Viti Levu.

He adds his Government has massively reduced call charges, text and broadband rates, and there are now more active SIM cards in Fiji.

This has been accompanied by the extension of 3G and 4G coverage, giving 95 per cent of Fijians access to cellular data.

The introduction of free-to-air digital television, has allowed them to transmit from 17 sites across Fiji, including Levuka, Kadavu and Taveuni, and satellite coverage to villages in Rotuma, Moala, Yanuca island, Cikobia, and several remote villages in the interior of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
