Female entrepreneurs from Kadavu, Lomaiviti and Lau – are attending a ‘Capacity Building Workshop’ in Suva, to promote gender equality.
The workshop aims to promote equal participation for women in decision-making, and raises their involvement in making a difference in the lives of community members.
This workshop was made possible through the assistance from the Government of Japan, and the United Nations Development Programme, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.
While delivering her opening speech yesterday, the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation – Mereseini Vuniwaqa said, that rural women are leaders, entrepreneurs and their contributions are important to the development of the Fijian families, communities and economy as a whole.
Vuniwaqa said that the objective of the Capacity Building Workshop – is to allow the participants to understand their rights and responsibilities on Social, Economic AND Political Empowerment, and measures to address social issues, within their respective communities.
She challenged the women present to establish support groups, that will listen and look out for each other, report violence against women, and ask their leaders to address issues.
