Former Wellington Phoenix star striker, Roy Krishna, the winner of both the Johnny Warren Medal and Golden Boot, was named the “Sportsman of the Year’, at last night’s Wellington Sports Awards at TSB Arena, New Zealand.

Organised by Sport Wellington, the Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards serve to acknowledge, promote, and celebrate the contribution that sport makes to the wider Wellington community.

Krishna, who recently announced his exit from the Wellington Phoenix club after five and a half seasons in the A-League, is set to continue his professional career in the Indian Super League, a bold move he says he looks forward to, with the support of his family.

Krishna recently signed a 12-month contract with Kolkata-based club ATK, having rejected a new multi-year deal from the Phoenix, which they argue was the most rewarding they have ever offered a player.

While the destination and length of his contract may come as a surprise, Krishna says he is excited by the chance to play in India, where his ancestors originated before moving to Fiji.

Krishna says he has great support from his family and looks forward to the new football journey, ahead of him.
