Farmers have been urged to take agriculture seriously and treat it like a profession instead of a part time or a leisure activity.
The Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Waterways and Environment Hon. Mahendra Reddy made this comment while speaking to farmers at Natabe in Daku this morning.
“We cannot have farmers who take farming as a part time or as leisure activity,” Dr. Reddy said.
He said that Government was there to assist farmers but farmers need to play their part and put in their contribution.
Reddy added that farmers who are being assisted should utilise these resources wisely and to ensure that they achieve maximum productivity.
“We need to spread out and assist all farmers. We can’t be focusing on the same farmer every year,” he said.
Dr. Reddy said it was imperative that farmers give their all when engaging in agriculture whether it be cultivation or livestock farming.
“We want to assist every farmer. You show your contribution and we will come in to assist because we want agriculture to be treated as a business,” he said.
Reddy will be visiting other farming communities during his two day tour to Vanua Levu.
