The President, His Excellency Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, and Minister for Forestry Osea Naiqamu officially launched one of Government’s new national priorities to plant 4 Million Trees in 4 Years at State House in Suva this morning.
The 4-Million Trees-in-4 Years initiative is part of Government’s renewed effort to continue the fight against climate change and to protect Fiji’s environment and rich biodiversity.
“This initiative builds on the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development particularly the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15, and supports the New York Declaration on Forests, which aims to end natural forest loss globally by 2030,” President Konrote said.
Apart from the 4 Million Trees, Minister Naiqamu said, they also intend to plant not less than 500,000 mangroves over the next four years to protect the coastal ecosystems.
“The 4-Million Tree initiative will see us plant all kinds of trees from timber trees, fruit tress, ornamental tress to non-wood species and mangroves,” Minister Naiqamu said.
