His Excellency, the President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote attended the celebration of the 85th birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan at the Tamavua this evening.
Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji His Excellency Mr. Masahiro Omura while officiating at the event commended the strengthened relationship between Fiji and Japan over the years.
“In May this year, the 8th Pacific Islands Leaders meeting, PALM8 was held in Japan. This meeting was important occasion to deepen our bilateral relations.”
“Our Embassy, together with Fijian counterparts is earnestly following the summit meeting.”
H.E Omura shared a brief history of the His Majesty the Emperor of Japan and the related ceremonies to the abdication and the enthronement next year.
H.E Omura highlighted that from July this year, direct flights between Nadi and Narita has resumed and he was hoping of more people exchanges and they hope to support the promotions for expanding tourism between the two countries.
Fiji and Japan share a long-standing bilateral relationship in the areas technical cooperation through JICA, parliaments support program and government scholarships offered to students in Fiji to study in Japan.
Ambassador’s commendation awards were presented to Professor Jito Vanualailai (Director Research, Professor Applied Mathematics of USP) and Dr. Joeli Veitayaki (Associate Professor School of Marine Studies, USP).
