The Suva Magistrates Court today convicted a man who posed as a police officer to obtain money in 2015.

Binesh Pillay was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one (1) count each of Obtaining a Financial Advantage by Deception and False or Misleading Information.

The Accused pretended to be a police officer at the Valelevu Police Station and obtained the sum of $300.00 FJD after promising to assist in releasing an inmate from the Suva Remand Centre.

He also then provided a false residential address to a court officer while the court officer was filling out the Accused’s bail undertaking form.

Resident Magistrate Deepika Prakash said that the Prosecution proved the elements of both offences beyond reasonable doubt.

Furthermore, she ordered that the Accused be remanded at the Suva Remand Centre until the next court date.
Twenty eight days was given for appeal.

The matter was adjourned to 11 February 2019.
