15 thousand 862 drivers have been booked for speeding from January 1st to May 1st of this year.

Twenty lives have been lost on our roads this year compared to 15 for the same period last year with speeding and drunk and drive the leading causes of road fatalities.

A serious concern for the Fiji Police Force is the arrest of 278 drivers who were caught driving under the influence of alcohol.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu says Operation Tatarovi II is now in force throughout the four policing divisions as concerns grow for the increasing number of motor vehicle accidents and fatalities.

ACP Tudravu adds traffic operations over the next 30 days will see increased activity not only conducting routine operations but will also be carrying out awareness to drivers and pedestrians alike as their actions have also contributed to a greater extent the number of road accidents.

He adds they will be working with the Land Transport Authority with the focus on increasing all efforts towards making our roads safer however we will need everyone’s cooperation to help achieve this.
