Opposition member of Parliament Pio Tikoduadua today questioned governments plans in reviving the sugar industry.
While moving his motion Tikoduadua said the sugar industry is not meeting its target.
“The sugar industry has survived many disasters, catastrophic cyclones, hurricane, severe droughts and flooding- the challenge over the twelve years is proving to be to be immutable,” he said.
In response, Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Industry Voreqe Bainimarama said the industry is developing policies and strategies with stakeholders to help cane growers increase productivity.
“The Ministry of Sugar Industry has worked with institutions to carry out regular consultations, meetings, discussion and take actions on the issues that affects them (cane growers) and the industry as a whole,” said Bainimarama.
