COP 23 Climate Champion and Minister for Defence and National Security, Inia Seruiratu today addressed the World Health Organisation side event: Health and Climate Change Report at the International Conference Centre in Katowice, Poland.

Minister Seruiratu said that Fiji like her neighbours in the Pacific is already experiencing the effects of change on health.

“Improving health delivery, fortifying existing infrastructure and extending resilient infrastructure to vulnerable communities are urgent tasks. We need all the support we can muster to build this new age of healthcare facilities that use renewable energy and with climate proof infrastructure that can withstand strong winds and extreme weather events.”

He also added that Fiji is again proudly supporting the launch of the Report on Health and Climate Change.

“This report calls our attention to the inter-linkages between climate change and health and underscore the importance of incorporating health systematically into the implementation of the Paris Agreement.”

This report is a contribution from the public health community to support the negotiations of the UNFCCC. It was written at the request of COP 23 President and Prime Minister Hon. Frank Bainimarama to the WHO to prepare a report on health and climate change, to be delivered at COP24.
