Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Waterways and Environment, Dr. Mahendra Reddy today received a courtesy visit from South Korean Ambassador Her Excellency Cho Shin-hee.
Discussions focused on areas of mutual cooperation, and has established Fiji receiving funding from the Government of the Republic of Korea under its Small Grant Assistance Program to support Fiji’s small projects for 2019.
During the discussion, H.E Cho Shin-hee has also confirmed US$200,000.00 assistance towards the riverbank stabilization and protection program currently undertaken by the Ministry of Waterways and Environment.
Dr. Reddy said a submission for the assistance was made to the Republic of Korean Government for the Vetiver Grass Nursery for River Bank Stabilisation and Sustainable Management of Land and Water Resources project in 2018.
Minister Reddy acknowledged the assistance and said the project on the development of nurseries for vetiver grass to be planted near riverbanks would commence soon.
“Fiji is one of two countries selected for the assistance from the submission done by five other countries. The other country that received the assistance is Nauru.
During the meeting, Hon. Reddy also requested the Republic of Korean Government’s assistance on the agriculture sector based on identified agricultural projects by the Ministry of Agriculture.
H.E. Cho said as Fiji is suffering from various impacts of Climate Change including frequent flooding, she hopes this riverbank stabilization and protection program can contribute to preventing future flooding and improving Climate Change Adaptation Capacities of Fiji.
She added that Agriculture is one of the key industries of Fiji and looks forward to expanding bilateral cooperation in this important sector.
