Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau led a team of officers to the village of Vuci, Tokatoka in Tailevu recently as part of ongoing commitments by government to address the plight of all Fijians.
The visit followed a request made by the people of “na vi rourou” through the Leadership of Turaga na Tui Vuci, Ratu Anare Rasumusumu.
The Prime Minister had launched the Vanua of Vuci’s strategic plan on the 15th of October, 2018 and the Ministry of Fisheries is one of the Ministries that was invited to help operationalise the objectives reflected in the strategic plan for Vuci.
Minister Koroilavesau thanked the vanua of Vuci for the commitment shown by being able to work collaboratively as shared resource owners to achieve a common goal.
“Government is always ready to serve all Fijians and is prepared to assist the Vanua of Vuci. While the Vanua of Vuci is not immune to the impacts of climate change, the Ministry of Fisheries is ready to assist the community with aquaculture and climate change adaptation. Primarily focused on areas that are not suitable for farming due to salt water intrusion,” Minister Koroilavesau said.
For the Vanua of Vuci, there are 3 main areas of focus which include, Climate change mitigation and adaptation, securing alternative sources of income and improved standard of living.
During the talanoa session, the Hon Minister and officials elaborated on the Ministry’s initiatives with emphasis on viable projects which includes the culturing of tilapia and shrimps.
The women of Vuci were also assisted with clarification on license arrangement and shared their challenges with the visiting team.
Identified areas of assistance include, the need to secure development partners, training on financial literacy, building village capacity through improved education and capacity building through skill based training.
The Ministerial visit ended with a clear indication of the way forward. The Ministry of Fisheries in the coming months will work with the Vanua of Vuci to help realise priorities of fisheries development, addressing climate change through mitigation and adaption and ensuring the sustainable use of resources.
