Makitalena Cikamatana has been appointed the Team Manager for the upcoming Oceania Weightlifting Championships to be held in New Caledonia from 26 – 30 June, 2018.
This will be her first time managing a team to a championship.
Makitalena attended the Oceania Sport Education Program’s (OSEP) Team Manager Training in September 2017 and put her hand up to lead the team at Weightlifting Fiji’s (WF) Executive Board Meeting on 29th April 2017.
Makitalena, who is Ovalau based, is one of the Vice President’s of WF. A large part of the team will come from Ovalau and her biggest challenge is to coordinate new passports for the newer athletes, uniforms and logistics. The team will mainly consist of youth athletes, some who will be travelling out of the country for the very first time.
WF is looking at sending a full youth team of six boys and six girls in the different weight categories. The Oceania Championship is a team-based qualification event for the Youth Olympic Games to be held in October in Argentina. The youth category at this year’s Oceania Championship is any athlete born between January 2001 and December 2005.
Experienced youth athletes like Sofia Kinikinilau and Maria Mareta will be in fierce competition to qualify for the one place for the Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October.
Makitalena is the mother of weightlifting sensation Eileen Cikamatana. Eileen, who is training in Noumea will be competing at the championships as well.
