Prefects of Rotuma High School yesterday got to learn a lesson or two about leadership from the Head of State himself.
Speaking at the Prefects’ Investiture Ceremony, His Excellency the President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote reflected his days as a school prefect and now as the Head of State to communicate some valuable lessons to some 36 students of Rotuma High School.
“You are the team leaders for these young boys and girls. I congratulate you all. Now let me remind you that leadership is all about serving. Leadership is the ability to get people what you want them to do. And they will only do that if they have trust and confidence in you,” H.E President Konrote said.
“You have got to learn to be obedient. Obedient starts within a home, you are going to be our leaders of tomorrow”
“To be a leader you have got to be intelligent. Your knowledge is important for you and for those whom you are leading,” H.E President Konrote said.
The Head of State also reminded students to continue challenging their limits, be innovative, visionary and have the courage to stand for what is right.
“Your appointment as prefects comes with a lot of responsibilities, and you must undertake these responsibilities with courage, tenacity, righteousness and humility”
For 48 year old mother, Juliam Ufamarata who hails from the village of Pepje, she couldn’t hold back tears of joy when her 18 year-old son Jerran Peter Ufamarata was inducted as the Head Boy of the school by H.E President Konrote.
“I am very happy and emotional at the same time because he is the first Rotuma High School Head Boy from my family since the school was established. This is indeed an achievement for our family and I dedicate this achievement to all my relatives in Fiji and Rotuma,” Julian said.
For the Head Boy Jerran Peter Ufamarata to be inducted by the Head of State himself was an honor.
“Having H.E President Konrote badge me as Head Boy is a wonderful event of my life that I will always remember. His words of advice will serve as a guidance for me and all Prefects inducted today,”Jerran said.
President Konrote also visited Paptea District School and planted 24 trees as part of the 4 million trees in 4 years initiative supported by two High Chiefs of Rotuma, Gagaj Maraf and Gagaj Kauseraf.
