The Government of Japan has donated FJ$one hundred and seventy three thousand nine hundred and eight Fijian dollars towards the construction of a fully furnished classroom block and a two bedroom teachers quarters for Lavena primary school.
This is under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme.
The Second Secretary of Development Cooperation at the
Embassy of Japan Hirotaro Ohira handed over the new facilities on behalf of Ambassador of Japan Masahiro Omura this week in Taveuni.
Lavena Primary School was established in 2010 and provides quality education to students from Lavena village and neighboring settlements.
The school has been experiencing a steady increase in student roll. Since there are no separate classrooms available for Year 6 and Year 8,students share classrooms with Year 5 and Year 7 students.
This has led to overcrowding of classrooms and has adversely affected students’ academic performance.
To date, 374 projects have been implemented under the GGP
Programme which amount to an approximate value of USD 26 million.
