“International White Cane Day” is an annual event celebrated globally for Vision Impaired people on October 15.
The mission of the White Cane Day is to Educate the world about Blindness and how the blind and visually sighted persons live and work independently
For visually impaired, Lanieta Tuimaibau, a white cane is what she has relied on for the past 17 years of her life since losing her sight at the age of ten.
A key challenge for blind and partially sighted persons in Fiji is the white canes are not readily available in Fiji and its high cost puts it out of reach.
The United Blind Persons of Fiji will be conducting Awareness sessions with the Legal Aid Commission in all their officers in Suva, Nasinu and Nausori in the next two weeks. Official Celebration will begin next Monday.
