Champion jockey Damien Oliver has had an injury scare less than a week out from the 2018 Melbourne Cup.

Oliver suffered his second pre-race mishap in recent times – this time when his mount Lucky Fish unseated him before the last race on Bendigo Cup day and left him limping and nursing an injured left ankle.

Three-time Melbourne Cup winner Oliver was left prone on the Bendigo turf, with his riding boot off, and he later said he may go for x-rays and scans on Wednesday night.

The star hoop, who has been booked to ride Red Verdon in next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, is hoping he will be fit for a big week ahead including rides in three Group I races on Victoria Derby day on Saturday.

It is the second injury drama for Oliver in recent times after he suffered severe leg bruising in late September at Flemington when his mount Thousand Wishes flipped backwards in the barriers.
