“The increase in the budget allocation will enable the ministry to continue strengthening its protection system and services, to better protect women and children in Fiji”.
This was the statement made by “Save the Children Fiji”, CEO – Iris-Low Mckenzie, on her response to the budget allocation for the Ministry of Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, of $133.0million an increase of $19.8million.
Mckenzie said inter-agency collaboration is needed to address these protection issues, and therefore the budget will allow for advocacy and awareness raising, at all levels to ensure that everyone understands the law.
She added people should know what services they are able to access, and work together to prevent any form of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of women and children.
McKenzie said that it is also encouraging to see support for families increasing – through welfare assistance for more long term benefits and sustainability, for low income earners, rather than ‘one-off’ cash transfers.
