Fiji Airways National 7s team have been beaten by hosts Canada in round of the Vancouver 7s.
Fiji went down 19 – 26.
Fiji have a man down with injury, and Matt Mullins makes the most of the temporary man advantage to break down the left wing.
And another for Canada! Luke McCloskey drives through the Fijian defence and finds Connor Braid on his outside for the score. What a start for the hosts to take a 12-nil lead.
You can’t keep Fiji out of the game for long. Terio Veilawa spots a gap and makes no mistake running into it.
Jerry Tuwai sets up Sevuloni Mocenacagi, who evades the jersey grab on his break, and Fiji are level 12 – 12.
Luke McCloskey takes a monumental hit and is winded. He calls on the crowd to lift it as he departs the field.
On it, his teammates do! Mike Fuailefau powers his way through Fiji’s defence and Canada are ahead again.
But they’re penalised for holding on too long and that is a vicious break from Fiji! Tuwai breaks quickly, his pass to Aminiasi Tuimaba is inch-perfect, and the 23-year-old is so quick. Fiji level 19 – all.
Harry Jones gets Canada back ahead! It’s a great step from Nathan Hirayama to divide the defence and Jones is able to put the ball down. Jones isn’t happy about a kick on his hand as he grounds, but nothing doing according to the referee.
And Canada hold on! They’ve beaten Fiji 26 – 19, the reigning champions here in Vancouver — and this has been an incredible hour of rugby! Three consecutive upsets through France, Spain, and now Canada.
