Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabeteopened the National Consultation on Governance for the National Human Research Ethics in Fiji, in Nadi this morning.

“As a basic principle according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), research ethics governs the standards of conduct for scientific researchers,” he noted.

“The intent is to enable researchers to adhere to ethical principles in order to protect the dignity, rights and welfare of research participants, especially in communities around Fiji.”

Dr. Waqainabete challenged participants to come up with a new system of Human Research Ethics Review that is adaptable, efficient and effective but robust enough to protect Fijians from any harmful research.

Alongside officers from the Ministry of Health & Medical Services – Fiji, participants include representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), consultants, senior officials from the Ministry of Education, Fiji, Department of Immigration and Fiji Higher Education Commission.
