Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum addressed the UN Security council today and discussions surrounded climate related disasters on International Peace and Security took place.
Khaiyum represented the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama at the council meet in New York.
In delivering his address Khaiyum highlighted the known fact of climate change transforming our natural world and that extreme national catastrophes and frequencies. such as major prolonged droughts and super cyclones tells us that the natural world has fundamentally changed.
Khaiyum says that this can also take away the steady progress that we have made in acquiring the global goals. He also highlighted the constant addressing on the issue by the Bainimarama during his reign as COP President.
He also highlighted the processes government undertook in the relocation programs because of climate change.
Khaiyum further says that highlighting the issues of relocation to the council was not done to imply an immoral point, but to show them how close we are to tipping point.
