To assist with sugar cane cultivation during the dry season, Fiji Sugar Corporation have acquired twenty 2500litre mobile water tankers.
These mobile water tankers can be used by sugarcane farmers to irrigate their crops, particularly for newly planted seed cane, which will enhance germination.
The introduction of these water tankers will meet some of the irrigation needs faced by sugarcane farmers. And it will be handy during extended dry weather periods, a bonus for growers to enable them to continue their planting momentum during these dry spells.
Few weeks ago, the FSC Agricultural Services team tested the new water tankers at the FSC estate farms in Drasa. Farm demonstrations have also been carried out prior the tankers’ distribution to FSC Sector Offices.
FSC CEO Graham Clark says “the tankers are an initial step towards supplementary irrigation for the sugar industry and if these work out well this year, we will be ordering more in the coming years”.
