In an effort to encourage further professional development for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teachers, the Fiji National University (FNU) has announced it will offer scholarships to three teachers from the TVET sector in Fiji.
The scholarships will be available to TVET teachers who will be graduating from Australia Training Pacific Coalition (APTC) with Certificate IV in TVET Teaching at the end of this month.
The successful trio will undertake Higher Education Certificate Teaching in TVET, a 120-credit Level 5 programme offered by FNU’s College of Humanities and Education (CHE).
FNU Vice Chancellor Professor Nigel Healey said as a dual sector University, it understood the important role of TVET instructors and the need to provide them with an opportunity to upgrade their qualifications.
The Higher Education Certificate Teaching in TVET is a stand-alone qualification but successful completion allows direct entry into Year 2 of FNU’s Bachelor of Education (TVET) for teachers wishing to progress further in their professional studies.
“These scholarships allow outstanding TVET teachers to upgrade their qualifications, extend their professional development and, contribute to the development of a knowledge based Fijian society,” said VC Healey.
“This year, Fiji National University is offering three full tuition scholarships (so that the recipients can study at no cost) to outstanding graduates from the Certificate IV TVET Teaching national qualification. We are looking for future TVET Teaching “Champions” who are not just academically talented, but who are committed to helping develop TVET teaching as a profession,” the VC added.
The Level 5 programme is designed to be studied part-time by working TVET teachers in the evening. It has a strong “action research” orientation, which will enable students take new teaching methods and strategies into their own classrooms and experiment to find what works best for them.
Apart from completing the application forms, the applicants will also have to include a 500-word Letter of Application setting out their views on;
– The importance of professional development for TVET teachers
– The impact of TVET on the Economy of Fiji
– The benefit to your career of undertaking the Higher Education Certificate Teaching TVET
