Students and villagers in Lutu, Wainibuka in Naitasiri have suffered in the last two days due to flooding.

School students have not been able to go to school, consequently missing out on important classes.

“Today is the second day that the students have had to miss school. Also villages have been unable to travel to Suva for business purposes as the bus has been stranded at Vuisiga village and the villagers have had to walk the distance to catch the bus. This is one of the major difficulties that we encounter every time there is heavy rain, the bridge is always underwater. Relevant authorities have carried out maintenance works but we are still stranded every time there is heavy rain,” said Tevita Raisuqe – Headman – Lutu/Wainibuka/Naitasiri.

Raisuqe adds they have had to encounter this problem very often and they are pleading with the relevant authorities to please help them out.

“It was raining heavily from last night till this morning and the school children have suffered as they have had to miss classes because the carrier that transports them to school couldn’t cross the flooded bridge. So we have had to accommodate them at Lutu. The RSL carrier couldn’t go again in the afternoon as the bridge was still under water.”
