The Fiji womens under 15 basketball team has won their opening match in the FIBA Oceania Under 15 Championship in Port Moresby.
Fiji defeated Papua New Guinea 85 – 46.
Estelle Kainamoli led all scorers with 29 points while Moana Liebregts and Ranadi Koroi added 12 points each.
Fiji stringed together a 15-0 run to end the third quarter to take a 62-35 lead never looked back.
Alice Kaiawa offered a bright spot for the home team with 26 points to pace PNG.
Meanwhile Fiji Mens Under 15 Basketball team failed to keep the momentum going on Day two of the FIBA Oceania Under 15 Championship in Port Moresby.
The side lost both its matches.
Fiji were beaten 119 points to 27 against Australia.
Australia stepped on the throttle from the get go taking a 41-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
Australia’s unrelenting defense forced Fiji to commit 45 turnovers and also displayed their unselfishness with 24 assists.
They went on to win every quarter convincingly and while Fiji held them to only 14 points in the final quarter.
Fiji then went down to New Zealand by 105 – 27.
