The Football Ferns appeared to have been inspired by their under-17 counterparts yesterday after they wrapped up OFC Women’s Nations Cup pool play with a 10-0 win over Fiji at the Stade Numa-Daly Magenta in Noumea last night.

After watching the NZ U17 women’s side reach the semi-finals of their World Cup in Uruguay, the Ferns delivered a top-notch performance of their own to finish top of Group B.

Despite Fiji’s best efforts to play defensively, the Ferns managed to use width to their advantage and broke through in the eighth minute with Annalie Longo.

The team ran riot from there, with Sarah Gregorius topping the scoring card with her second hat-trick of the tournament.

Longo and Katie Rood scored braces while Meikayla Moore, Emma Rolston and an own goal wrapped up the scoring spree.

The team also celebrated captain Ria Percival who earned her 133rd cap for the the Football Ferns – the most by a New Zealander in international football.

The team now turns their attention to a semi-final with hosts New Caledonia in Lifou on Wednesday.
