Fiji will this year be commemorating 40 years of its peacekeeping duties with the United Nations.
With the theme ‘Fiji’s Sacrifice for Global Peace’, the commemoration will be the first of its kind to remember those who have served not only in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) but in peacekeeping deployments around the globe.
The week-long commemoration will be held in all centres around the country and will begin with a church service this Sunday, June 10 at the Centenary Church in Suva including the two centres in Labasa and Lautoka.
The decision behind the church service was due to the fact that the first contingent that had departed our shores for Lebanon attended a farewell church service on the same date at the Centenary Church.
Fiji has been participating with the UNIFIL since June 1978.
