Fiji is among the Top 5 Nations in the World that Abuse Women!
These were sentiments shared by the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Women and Poverty Alleviation – Dr Joe Koroivueta, while speaking to the villagers in Nacavanadi in Gau.
Dr Koroivueta is leading a Government delegation, visiting some of the villages in Gau and Nairai, to celebrate “International Rural Women’s Day”.
“In Fiji today, if we look at the statistics for Abuse on Women, we are ranked number 2 in the Pacific. Looking at the numbers world-wide we are among the Top 5 in the world. From the findings of FWCC it has been identified that from the women that were interviewed, 70 percent were seen to have been physically abused, raped, punched and most were always verbally abused by their spouses and partners.”
The delegation comprises civil servants from the Ministry of Women, the Judiciary, Education Ministry,Health Department, the Fiji Navy and the RFMF and members from the Fiji Cancer Society.
Dr Koroivueta adds that the main purpose – is to “Leave no One Behind” in Government’s Initiative for Development.
“That is exactly what this visit is for, Leaving No one Behind! And it’s also about bringing Government Services to your doorstep, services you always longed for but you couldn’t have access to because of transportation issues. We also have some elderly people in the community and they find it hard to travel to the mainland to be provided with these services.”
