The Republic of the Fiji Navy is currently hosting the third South West Pacific Heads of Maritime Forces conference at Holiday Inn Suva. Inaugurated in 2017 the meeting provides a platform for delegates to discuss maritime issues and ways of dealing with them collaboratively.
In attendance this year are Chiefs of Navies from Australia and New Zealand, Maritime Commanders from New Caledonia, PNG, Vanuatu and Cook Islands, Chiefs of Maritime Police of Kiribati, the Deputy Chief of Staff from Tonga, and representatives from Solomon Islands and Samoa. Local delegates includes representatives from the border agencies and maritime enforcement stakeholders.
Discussion and presentations focused on maritime security issues that is common amongst member countries. Academics, professionals from regional organizations like Pacific Transnational Crime Coordinating Centre and Forum Fisheries Agencies, Fiji Revenue and Customs Services and non profit organizations like Sasakawa Peace Foundation provided briefs and presentations during the conference.
