The National Provincial – Age Grade Championship – Girl Sevens Competition will kick off tomorrow, Wednesday 12 December at 9AM at the Prince Charles Park in NADI – Fiji.

The tournament now in it’s second year will feature 32 teams that will participate in three main age grades, the Under 15, 17 & 19.

It will also feature 12 provinces and over 384 girls which is more than double the number of provinces and girls represented respectively in 2017.

Tournament Director Tihrani Uluinakauvadra said that the interest in rugby amongst girls has rapidly gained momentum as teams are now coming in from the northern side of Fiji, as far Cakaudrove, Bua and Macuata.

“This goes to show their (girls) eagerness to play rugby after playing Tag rugby over four years now,” Ulunikauvadra said.

“The girls have gained enough confidence as they make steps to progress through to the contact form of competitions,” he added.

Ulunikauvadra also stated that a keen interest has been sparked through the international representation and exposure that women have through rugby, which provides a platform to display their abilities.

“That’s why we’re coming up with these age grade competitions to ensure we have pathways with these Get Into Rugby girls who have been playing tag rugby for the past four years,” Ulunikauvadra said.

“Before they (girls) see the Fijiana team being represented in the HSBC series and now have they see the 15s Competitions and the U18 Youth Olympic Sevens Tournament. They can see that there is a lot of potential opportunities for them so that’s why this year, you can see that there is more than double the number of teams from last year, and also seeing the interest from Cakaudrove, Bua and Macuata where there is a very strong Get Into Rugby (GIR) unit,” he added.

Another focus for the 2018 Championship is to promote women involvement in the four strands of the game (Coaching, Match Officiating, Medical, Strength and Conditioning).

The one day tournament will see the Under 15 grade play Tag rugby whilst the Under 17 and 19 play the 7 a-side contact form.

The Tournament is hosted in partnership with Fiji Rugby, and Oceania Rugby’s Get Into Rugby Program with funding support from UN Wome
