The Fiji Museum Board of Trustees is aware of the plans to rezone the land allocated for recreational use (Lot 2 SO 2433 & Lot 1 S 1236) within the Botanical Gardens & Meke Grounds.
It acknowledges the significant interest that the proposed re-zoning of the current car park area of the Thurston Gardens has generated.
Similarly, we are appreciative of the transparent manner with which the Suva City Council and the Ministry of Local Government has
presented the proposed development. This has provided the Fijian public with an opportunity to respond to and raise any potential concerns.
The Fiji Museum Archaeology Section is currently undertaking considerable research and consultation on the archaeological and paleontological significance of the site, in regard to the Fiji Preservation of Objects1 of Archaeological and Paleontological Significance Act (POAPI).
We will also be assessing how the development interfaces with the surrounding properties, in particular our National Museum and the significant heritage botanical feature that exists in Thurston Gardens.
The findings of this research will be presented for the Board’s consideration in a timely manner, enabling the latter to provide an informed and considered opinion and response prior to the deadline stipulated in the Notice to the public.
