The Fiji Women’s Rights Movement has marked another milestone on its work on Women’s Access to Justice with the latest release of case data analysis on Family Law and Violence Against Women and Children from the Island Circuit Courts.

It is the Final Document to be published as part of the “Balancing the Scales: Improving Fijian Women’s Access to Justice” Research Project funded by the European Union and supported by the UN Women Fiji Multi Country Office.

The latest publication by FWRM contains in-depth analysis from the Island Court Sittings from Taveuni, Lau and the Lomaiviti regions from 2016-2017. It found women were skeptical to approach officers with their legal matters as all of the officers were Male.

FWRM Executive Director-Nalini Singh says more needs to be done to create a comfortable space for women when it comes to Reporting violence against them or if they have been subjected to abuse.

Singh says the recent release of the May Sexual offence statistics by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution has been appalling. The latest statistics revealed there were 87 counts of separate incidents of Rape and Sexual offences in May alone

FWRM aims to reach out to as many communities to make a Difference as shown by the Research, with  progress shown on the number of women reporting Violence and Abuse has increased.
