The Consumer Council of Fiji is calling for a form of standards control on the items imported into the country.
Chief Executive Officer, Premila Kumar shared this during the Council’s presentation to the Standing Committe on Social Affairs yesterday.
There is no doubt that there is a demand for fake branded items because of its lower cost.
Kumar said the Council doesn’t have an issue on the sale of fake branded items except when it comes to medicines.
She said there is tight control when it comes to the import of medicines – but consumers should always remain aware of some unscrupulous traders who try to profit through deception.
A total of $700 000 was collected for fines from non-compliance of VAT reduction from 15 to 9 per cent.
