The President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote officiated at the Launching of the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect National Celebration held at the Grand Pacific Hotel Today.
Today’s Program reemphasizes the need for Child Protection in Fiji.
(The Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect or PCAN in short is observed globally in November every Year. The PCAN is a worldwide effort to mobilize our collective responsibility to prevent and confront all forms of Child Abuse and neglect. I’ve been advised that today event is a culmination series of Awareness Programs that have been undertaken throughout the year.)
He said the recent statistics have shown an increase in child Abuse.
The President also launched the Child Helpline Mascot-Charlie Today.
(Recent Statistics reveal an alarming magnitude of both Child abuse and neglect, now for instance the office of the Director of Public Prosecution reported of over 300 cases of Rape and sexual offenses on children during the 8 months period from January to August this year. Now this means for the past 8 months, more than one child will be neglected and abused each day. In launching PCAN 2018, I would like to appeal to all parents and guardians to take more care and responsibility in looking after our young ones)
