The recent upgrading of Nasarava Road in Labasa by the Fiji Roads Authority has significantly improved access for farmers especially in rainy weather, according to a resident and sugarcane farmer, Rajendra Kumar.
The work will be delivered through Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) as part of the periodic road maintenance program to provide access to people in the Central, Northern and Eastern Divisions.
The road, which is located eight kilometers out of Labasa Town, caters for sugarcane farmers, root crop farmers, as well as 2000 residents.
Kumar said that because the road was located in a low-lying area, it often got flooded and also very dusty at times.
“I am very happy to see that this road is finally getting attention after all these years. Blocked drainage has caused flooding for us every time it rains. Now the road is also wider, compared to the old state,” he said.
A crew of six men is clearing water channels and high shoulders which will address the issue of flooding.
A total of 3.20 kilometers of drainage is currently being cleared.
