Goundar Shipping Limited Managing Director, George Goundar is requesting the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) to give them a four month Extension, so they can be able to meet the Requirements of all Vessel Documents.

Goundar while addressing the non-operation of all his vessels from Today for not complying with the Maritime Safe Ship Management Regulation 2014 says the traveling Public has been the most affected by this.

In a Press Conference this afternoon, Maritime Safety Authority-Acting CEO-Capt Philip Hill says all Shipping Companies have been given ample time to comply with the Safe Ships Management System since July last year.

Hill in responding to a request by Goundar Shipping for a 4 month Extension says providing such an extension wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the other Shipping Vessels that have complied.

Hill says its a safety system inputted on board and the regulation brings about  a safety culture for everyone that is working on board as well as for the company that is running the ship.

Goundar Shipping Vessels-Managing Director-George Goundar says the traveling Public has been affected the most by this. He has confirmed his 200 staff and Crew will not be affected by this disruption as they will be looked after.

He says all his Management Teams have been busy bringing in vessels from abroad and are requesting an extension to be able to comply with the Vessels Documents Requirements.  Goundar is currently in Japan over seeing his two other new vessels for the Franchise.

Other Shipping Companies have met with MSAF to reschedule their vessels to services the routes that Goundar Shipping Limited normally operates in which includes Savusavu, Taveuni, , Kadavu, Koro and other parts of the Lau Group.
