A 73-year-old Tailevu man was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by High Court Judge – Justice Riyaz Hamza today.

The accused was found guilty for raping his 13-year-old granddaughter, in August and October of 2015.

The 73 year old man who is the grand-uncle of the complainant was found guilty of two counts of rape.

The man was 69-years-old at the time of the incidents while his granddaughter was in Year 8.

In his sentence submission yesterday, Director of Public Prosecutions lawyer Taitusi Tuenuku stressed that the crime of rape has been too frequent in the society and the sentence should be a deterrence and denunciation for what he had done to the victim.

While reading out his sentence this afternoon Justice Riyaz Humza told the accused that being the victims grand-uncle his role was to protect her.

However he took advantage of her vulnerability and exposed the child to sexual acts ruining the child’s innocent mind.

He said the victim was traumatized and her studies were seriously affected.

Justice Humza added the victim will suffer for the rest of her life because of his shameful act.

The grandfather is sentenced to 13 years imprisonment with 9 years non-parole.
