Today marks a special occasion – as on this day back in 1993, Fiji had ratified the “United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child”.
Children in Fiji are fortunate to have legislation, that upholds Children’s Rights.
These were the sentiments of Abigail Aguilar – the President of ‘Kids Link Fiji’, which is a child lead initiative, of Save the Children Fiji.
Aguilar said that children in Fiji are so fortunate, that Fiji is among-st the 150 countries who have ratified this convention, and today marks the 25th anniversary since Fiji did this.
Through the Convention, more children are able to access education and health services, have legislation that protects children from abuse, neglect and exploitation, and a Child Helpline.
Aguilar says there is a huge commitment and initiative, undertaken by Government and relevant stakeholders, in ensuring that the CRC Principles are met, and the protection and best interest of the child, is a paramount priority.
Reigning Hibiscus Teen, Roselyn Sidal, said quote … “Even though Fiji ratified the UNCRC, Fijian children are still going through some challenges, in excising our rights, as we live in a patriarchal society – and it is really hard to convince our elders, to listen to our voices” …unquote.
