231 children in Fiji have been saved from the child labour environment from 2011 to date.

This was revealed by the Minister for Employment while officiating at the “World Day Against Child Labour ” celebration which was attended by various schools from around Suva.

These children have returned to school with some enrolled into technical training programs.

World Day Against Child Labour was commemorated today with the theme- “Children shouldn’t work in fields, but on dreams.”

Bala  says child labour is a global fight and prioritising education is a sustainable alternative to any form of child labour.

He added for decades, child labour has been an important global issue associated with limited educational opportunities, poverty and gender inequality.

Since 2011, the ministry as part of its programme has trained over 300 teachers and over 200 community leaders and farmers in awareness and mitigation of child labour.

Bala urged all stakeholders to continue to work collectively to address child labour through laws, policies, procedure and practices.

The employable age in Fiji is 15 years and above.
