The World Bank sees Fiji as the Hub of the Pacific and will be looking to explore more opportunities in the areas of tourism, fisheries amongst others.

This were the words of World Bank Country Director-Michel Kerf while officially opening their new office in Suva Today.

Members of the Diplomatic Corps, various CSO’s, and Heads of stakeholders were part of the ceremony.

Kerf says there are bigger opportunities in the South Pacific, there are things that countries can do to actually help eradicate extreme poverty and help the poorest of 40% of the population catch up with the rest of which are the main goals of the world bank.

While officiating at the event, Attorney-General-Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says having such base  office allows us to have a hands on approach and to tap into resources.

IFC’s Director for East Asia and the Pacific- Vivek Pathak says they are  committed to increasing their investment in Fiji, as they explore opportunities to help Fiji and countries in the South Pacific meet the needs for infrastructure, tourism, retail and wholesale industries, and support small and medium sized businesses, so vital for jobs and economic growth.

The World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans to countries of the world for capital projects. The World Bank Suva Office will have a staff of 19.
